A must stop for everyone in Sho Low. Stopped in on the way to Alpine and were immediately greeted by the owners Delena and Richard (I hope I got their names right). They are the 3rd owners of this cafe and really turned it around in 2014. They have a lot of passion and truly care about customer experience and were super friendly. My eldest son ordered a hotdog and fries. He said it was the best bun ever :) I sampled the fries which were great and didn't bother my stomach like most fries do. The rest of the family had burritos the size of Chipotle's and tacos. Hubby says the sweet pork was awesome. Son loves the beans and rice. Everything was super fresh. Don't miss this one!

This place has a very hard working staff and loyal customers. Everyone is very friendly. Great place for kids. Cute, colorful restaurant and low cost. For a foodie, the pork was a little bit dry, the rice wasn't cooked all the way through, and the red sauce was a bit bland.

We had the chance to visit this place on the way back from the White Mountains. As others have said, it is a very similar concept to Chipotle. However, their food has a little better flavor and there are more options to choose from. When we were there, the owners were working the kitchen and counter. They were very nice and personable. You could see their passion. It was nice to see them. I really hope this restaurant will be successful.

This is Chipotle on crack!!! So good! I stop here every time I am in the area. That says something because I live a couple hours from the Mexican border and I am ALWAYS burnt out on Mexican food!!! Eat here!!! Om nom nom

Drove through town, found this place on Yelp. AMAZING food!!! Very fresh ingredients and large portions. Restaurant menu is set up like Chipotle but WAY better. Owners are extremely friendly and helpful. Would come again!!

We needed a bite to eat on our road trip, and a consult with Yelp pointed to this place. The exterior was typical Show Low, but the interior was full of bright colors. The owner explained the concept and reassured me that all the sauces and beans were truly vegetarian since they were made with veggie stock. I got a fat veggie burrito with very flavorful refried beans. My husband and I didn't believe the owner's warning about the heat level of the green salsa, and but it was really spicy. Good stuff. My husband like his chicken bowl although the portion was a little small for my voracious eater. Service was very friendly, and the cafe seems like a place that is loved by the locals. We will definitely come back the next time we go to the White Mountains.

I'm really indecisive about my food but this place is GREAT! The owners are SUPER friendly and make you feel right at home. The food is SUPER fresh and delicious! Don't miss this place!

I'd been a few times and always loved the food and especially the cheerful hosts. My wife was getting ready to leave town and wanted to try it. We called at ten minutes to closing and Brad said come on by. They stayed open late...cheerfully to serve us. As usual, steak burrito was great.

Wow!!! This place was delicious, Fresh, very reasonably priced, and service was superb!! We might go back tonight for dinner!

This place, as everyone says, is like Chipolte, only better. I really liked the chicken soft taco the best. I had a pork hard taco and tasted my hubby's burrito, but the chicken had the most flavor. It was cooked on the grill and I love grilled flavor. I would honestly give them 5 stars (because the owners do seem to take pride in their restaurant and everything is super fresh, not five stars because it is fine dining), but I have some input that I hope they listen to: I would prefer that the MENU actually offered an option to buy one or two tacos and perhaps a side of rice or beans. The menu does not offer any smaller portions only three tacos, a huge burrito, or a large salad and nowhere did I see an option to add a side of rice or beans. I mentioned I was not that hungry and I was offered the option to buy two tacos. I agreed that would work. I wish I would have known I could downsize to my liking, making MY choices. I would have ordered ONE taco, a side of rice and a side of beans. Well, I got two tacos but was charged for three. I will probably go back, but I'll make sure I don't pay for more than I order or I'll order the full pop and take some home.

Holy Jalapeño's Batman! Great food, fast and friendly...a bit like visiting friends...friends that know how to make a tasty meal time after time. Extremely consistent Great portions Great variety Unique flavor profiles Friendly and professional Not to mention the little Coca cola decor touches, how can you go wrong with that! Visiting Showlow?...this is a local favorite

Really enjoyed our lunch here today! Very fresh ingredients with great flavor. We had steak burritos and steak tacos. Both excellent! Be sure to get the green enchilada sauce. It is fantastic! The staff is super friendly and the service is quick. We will definitely go again.

"Jala"lujah Jalapeno's! Just as the reviews state, this is a yummy, healthy, option in Show Low! Absolutely spotless and retro chic inside. My hubby and I had the Sweet Pork Bowls with all the fixins, including the Chipotle Cream Sauce- and our taste buds were screaming with joy! The owners are a delight-spent a few minutes chatting with us about the restaurants history. The spot was filled with customers-all enjoying delicious looking meals!

I normally don't write reviews, but this place deserves one. I make sure to stop in every time I pass through Show Low. The owners are super friendly and make everything (except one type of salsa) in house. That's right...real fresh food. This "cafe" is set up just like Chipotle and other fast casual restaurants. The first time I tried Jalapenos the owner recommended the pork with green enchilada sauce in a bowl. I have gotten this combo each time since. It's that good! Be sure to top off your bowl with their homemade cilantro ranch sauce. Incredible. An extra plus: they have a number of vegetarian and gluten free options for those with dietary restrictions. Very reasonably priced: a huge bowl and drink for ~ $10. Check this place out.

  • Amy S.

Great, fresh food! Just what I wanted on our trip home - not heavy, but very satisfying. It's nice to eat Mexican and have more to choose from than the standard burrito with a side of retried beans and rice. You'll love this place!

  • Sara H.

Really a great little place to eat if your driving through Show Low. It's a fast casual concept, so we got our great food very quickly. Service was great, the husband and wife are obviously passionate about having great food and everything was made fresh, even the dressing for our salad. We had a salad with sweet pork and a couple of quesadillas, split between 4 adults and it was more than we could finish. The hot dog was a little too gourmet for the 6 year old in our group, but I took a bite and it was yummy. It was on more of a roll than a bun, but definitely tasty. The man reason for the lost star is because the tea wasn't fresh brewed. A place that makes all its food from scratch should not have that Gold Peak garbage. I would really probably give it 4 1/2 stars if I could. I would go again if I'm in Show Low for sure.

So delicious! Family-friendly and all food freshly made. Our kids gobbled up their food quickly... Definitely worth a stop if the family is hungry. :=)

Deliciouuuusss food and amazing service. Stopped here after reading the excellent reviews on our way back from a camping trip and it definitely hit the spot. Not only was the staff (family owned) so friendly and inviting, but the style, decor and menu just blew us away. "Chipotle on crack" is an understatement. I ordered the Green Chili Cheeseburger and fries and my girlfriend had the Loaded Quesadilla. Both to die for. Will have to make this a required stop next time we're in town.

  • Raisa I.

Loved their food! But...I was disappointed in their "guacamole" since it was around the same price range as Chipotle. Their guac resembled a creamy sauce instead of the usual avocado salsa mix so I had to take one star off (based on my personal preference). That being said they were very courteous and attentive which I really liked. If you are in the Show Low area I would definitely give them a try.

Four starts for a small city restaurant! The friendly staff was just so welcoming. My son with Celiac disease and allergic to gluten was very well accommodated. The chef, I believe also the owner, knew everything about gluten free/celiac/allergies. Very helpful! The restaurant is clean. Clean bathrooms. Spacious inside and pretty cute decor. The menu is very interesting and very similar to Chiplote, but with more options. Some ingredients were very fresh and good. A couple of items I wondered if were really made in house. The sauces were very good. I can't recall the names of our dishes, but we had two adults entrees and three kids. We all enjoyed the food. Lots of flavor! We will probably come back next time we are driving through town. Again, the hospitality was great!

  • Colby H.

Visiting from Mesa. Great food. It's like chipotle or cafe rio. Very clean inside. Tacos were great. Soft shell. They melt cheese in between 2 tortillas and they build the taco how you like it. They have a good green chili sauce.

  • Lance R.

Finally... fresh Mexican food made to order in Showlow! I have been here 5 times in the last 3 weeks and I crave their food now. Even better than the food is the SUPER FAST service and the owners are always here making sure everybody is happy. I love coming here!

    (5)
  • Christine C.

Overall between the staff and the service everything was great! I will agree with a previous yelper and say I was fairly disappointed in the guacamole as it was more of a puree vs a thick guacamole. I will say one thing that may be irrational but their forks are extremely flimsy and made it difficult to eat my salad. That being said the food was great and I will definitely be back.

Ate at this place twice this week. Passing through go West and returning going East. Friendly atmosphere, food is prepared in combination anyway you like. I decided since I saw a real grill (something lacking at McD and other chain burger joints) I'd have a cheese burger and fries. To my horror, the cook pulled out a frozen hockey puck, tossed it on the grill with a plunk!, and frozen fries to make. While this is usually a disaster, the burger I received was cooked properly, tasty and the fries were good. Lettuce, tomato and raw onion were too chopped (they are for the other food they sell) but they piled onto the burger fine. The tacos I had on the other visit were good. Nice people, nice place. Will return.

What a cool little place coming into town - basic decor but very friendly staff and delicious food - I Had a taco bowl salad and the veg was fresh, home made sauces and salsas and the meat really good!

Fresh food, great service. So happy this place opened in Show Low, because otherwise you are in the middle of a food wasteland. We will stop here whenever making the trip to Tucson.

Chipotle like buffet choices but much more flavor. Wait staff was very fast and very friendly. We enjoyed our lunch and will return

I found Jalapeno Cafe to be a poor man's Chipotle. The taco/burrito meat lacked seasoning. Disappointing.

  • Michelle J.

Small family owned cafe. Very good food and wonderful people! Great selection. Tacos, burritos, bowls, taco salad, burgers, chicken strips, fries. Better than Chipotle! Way better!

  • Beth H.

This place makes wonderful food! I'm on a restricted diet for now, but it's ok! I get a great salad with the pork. I LOVE the cilantro-lime ranch dressing as well! Everything is fresh, delicious and the restaurant is always very clean. My husband and our son love the tacos! I recommend this place to everyone! Also the owners are so nice and friendly!

Stopped in while going through town towards Springerville. Pulled the U-Haul into the parking lot and Yelped them. Things looked good through others reviews so the boy(12) and I went in. A VERY friendly couple told me all about their operation and how their menu worked. To summarize, it's like Chipotle. I ordered their pork bowl with several toppings which was great. The boy ordered a beef soft taco. They asked if he only wanted one and he said yes. They let him know they would be happy to make another should he want it. The woman, whose name I have forgotten, stopped by our table, noticed he had finished his taco and asked if he wanted another and made it up for him straight away. The service was perfect and they were wonderful hosts.

This restaurant is a "must see" if you live or pass through Show Low. Fresh Mexican food at its finest. The husband and wife who run this establishment are warm and welcoming folks. They actually take pride in what they do and it clearly shows.

Nothing Mexican about this restaurant if you are looking for a Mexican restaurant this is not the place.Keep driving . I stopped here after 5 hours of driving hungry as heck thinking i was about to eat some bomb fresh food, man i was wrong The food was fresh but not good . It is like a Chipotle style restaurant but Chipotle is actually tasty. The steak taste of grease and some type of marinade that kills the beef flavor not good at all in my opinion. Also they have a grill shouldn't they be trying to grill the steak? I was not impressed by the toppings or sauces you can use on a burrito it's over done. They dont taste that good. By the time you bite into your burrito it's not a burrito anymore its a soggy undercooked tortilla full of sauce with no distinct flavor of your meat of choice . I had a steak burrito which they said would be big they use a quarter pound of beef which is not big they charge I think 7.99 for that which is way over price for what it is. 2.50 more for double meat which would put that at 10.50 for a regular sized burrito everywhere else. I ate about quarter of the burrito took two bites it was a mouthfull of sauce sweet n spicy salsa although I did not order anything sweet to be put in my burrito so I'm thinking I'll just open the burrito and eat the beef boy was that a mistake you could see the oil/grease seperate from the sauce but im like no biggie i got a fork so I took a bite of the steak and it was not tasty at all had no distinct flavor of beef. Sadly i did the unthinkable Im a fat boy so this was hard I toss away 3 quarters of a burrito . This is a mom & pop shop the atmosphere was nice and pleasant but if you have never been here before you have no idea what kind of restaurant you are walking into . They can do a better job of advertising what they are about and kind of restaurant they are like visuals even sample of they burrito combos they can make . Probably won't be returning here anytime soon .

One of my favorite, quick, affordable meals in the area. Like others have said it's similar to chipotle but in my opinion better. Very fresh food, with more unique ingredients than chipotle. They also have additional items like philly cheese steaks, burgers, etc.. Bonus its family owned and operated and they are very friendly.

This is husband and wife restaurant. Not fancy but really good home made food, very much like Chipotle. Very friendly owners

  • Kyle B.

Jalapeño Cafe is excellent!! The service is great with a friendly staff and speedy in-and-out time. The food is comparable to what you might find at Chipotle: fresh ingredients, similar style, and reasonable prices. However, the selection is greater and the variety of flavors is much more robust. I have not been very impressed with the food options in the White Mnts, but this place always seems to wet the palate. The downfalls of this establishment are that it's hours make it only convenient for lunch and that the location is a little out of the way. Worth trying if you are after something that is tasty, somewhat healthy, and full of flavor in the Show Low area.

This place is bomb!!! I go to med school in Tucson and did my surgery rotation up here for 3 weeks and this place was my staple. Great food for good prices and the owners are so sweet and fun. The atmosphere is wonderful and they have really done a lot to spruce the place up when they bought it. The owner has always wanted a restaurant and when the offer fell in his lap he decided to go for it, and boy, am I sure glad he did! Thanks for a great 3 weeks of food and I'll definitely be stopping by when I come back up for ski- season :) by the way, the sweet pork (and I don't usually like pork) is awesome. oh and ps- gluten free? No worries! Their healthy options are easy to decide from. Just stay away from the enchilada sauce which has wheat in it and confirm your order is gluten free with them you're good to go! I'm a pretty darn sensitive celiac and I haven't had a problem with their meals. They make their own sauces so what's in their food is exactly what they say they made it with (ie no bottled stuff). And don't confuse them with the restaurant Jalepeno Poppers which is down the road headed to pine top. Verrrry different restaurant and it's pretty greasy so I do not recommend it. Jalepeno Cafe is a close name but you should see the Maverick across the street when you pull in and then you know you're in the right spot. Hope this helped and you enjoy!

This place is awesome! Lots of tasty ways to customize fresh tacos, burritos, bowls and nachos. I am visiting from Albuquerque NM so I was happy to see chopped green chili and green chili sauce. Also, as a vegetarian I was excited to have lots of options. As one of the owners said, "everything is vegetarian except the meat." Can't wait to come back!

  • Sandy N.

Great place to eat if you find yourself in Showlow. This place is like Chipotle without the chain restraint flair. The food is better, and they give you many more options for what to put in your creation. For instance, I got the Veggie Bowl with Cilantro Rice, red enchilada sauce, pico de gayo, corn, black beans, onions, peppers, and guac. It was amazing. The people working the counter were very friendly and gave very fast service. If I am ever in the area again, I will definitely be back!

This is a wonderful little place in ShowLow. The food is fresh, the owners are friendly, and, remarkably remember us every time we go in, and we don't get there often. The first time my husband and son stopped, they really wanted a cheeseburger, which wasn't on the menu. No problem, the chef said and whipped up two cheeseburgers. My husband said it was the best cheeseburger he ever ate. The next time I was with them and I ordered meatless tacos and they topped it with my selections. It was yummy. Friendly, clean, good, tasty fresh food. What more could you ask for? Better ice tea, my only complaint. I have been going up to that neck of the woods for decades, it one of the best places, especially for the price, in the whole dang area.

Jalapeno Cafe is fab! We were driving through the area on 23 Dec and searching for places to eat on Yelp. Jalapeno Cafe came up and I took note of William R's review on 20 Dec. Everything he said is spot on! Deanna immediately greeted us when we came in and thoroughly walked us through the menu choices. All foods except for one salsa are made in house by her - MSG free, too! She immediately understood my need to eat gluten free as she has Celiac's. We built a combo burrito and a rice bowl and sat down to feast in the brightly-colored, festive dining room. The ambiance was fun and light and exactly what we needed for a break from the road. The food was fresh and delicious. My rice bowl was a large enough portion that I was able to enjoy it again the next day for lunch; what a fantastic leftover! I strongly recommend Jalapeno Cafe and will certainly make a point to stop there again when I'm anywhere remotely near them.

This is just a little Mexican cafe that we would have never found without yelp. We were on our way from phoenix to lakeside and we wanted something quick but good quality. This is a husband and wife owned restaurant with fresh ingredients that you can "build your own" kind of like chipotle. We arrived shortly before 8pm and didn't realize that was closing time. They stayed late and gave us great service and the food was really good. I had ground beef nachos and my husband had a steak burrito. We will be back!

  • Katy P.

Perfect for a quick lunch! Menu has lots of options: daughter wanted a hot dog, son and husband had tacos/burritos and I had the special- chipotle shrimp in a salad. Everything was tasty and fresh, excellent service (more than willing to accommodate dietary and picky child restrictions :) and it was a very clean and open restaurant. Great place, will be our new go-to when we are in Show Low.

  • Robert O.

Do not let the gravel parking lot fool you. I was met by the chef/proprietors who were wearing chef jackets. They put together a custom salad for me that was out of this world. Pulled pork excellent and cilantro/ranch dressing is wonderful. I was asked to choose from three different greens for the base of this salad. Wonderful food prepared by caring professionals and an unbelievably reasonable price. I am not a local, but I wish this restaurant were near my home!

I can't believe I've forgotten to add a review for this place before now! I'm here a few times/year for work, and have to say this is my favorite place to eat in Show Low. The owners are great- friendly and passionate about their business. I'm not an authority on the menu though, because I so love their loaded quesadilla that I've never tried anything else! Been there at least a half dozen times and always leave satisfied!

  • Jeremy T.

I was in town for the weekend. Some friends and I were famished after a long day of disc golfing and checked Yelp for a recommendation. At the top of the list was Jalapeno's, so we headed over. Based on the exterior, we almost bailed. Luckily, we didn't completely judge the book by it's cover. We, reluctantly, headed in and were greeted by the very friendly and helpful owners. They suggested the quesadilla and DAMN! It weighed a metric ton and was bursting with flavor. This place is legit.

I travel the northern part of our state almost every day as a part of my job. When I passed Jalapeno Café at 2:00 pm and saw the parking lot still full I had to stop. So glad I did. Great family owned establishment with all homemade ingredients. Excellent value! More than I could eat and tasted great! Keep up the quality and great work!

Awesome food and staff! Great for picky eats or someone who likes anything and everything. Staff is knowledgeable about real food and nutrition along with autoimmune diseases where you have to be super specific about where and how your food is prepared! I'll definitely be coming back for more.

So freaking good. We went there after a day of off-roading and this was a treat. I made a custom burrito with shredded beef, chicken, peppers, guacamole, cilantro rice and some kind of amazing ranch like sauce. My buddy got a Philly cheesesteak burrito (my idea) and they named it after him (The Capone). She even said they are putting my custom burrito on the menu. This place is fun, welcoming and delicious! It's a must!

I am stuffed, but happy. Went in because of the Yelp reviews and was not disappointed. Special of the night was grilled shrimp, husband ordered this and cleaned his "bowl." I ordered a sweet pork bowl and ate as much as I could. Be forewarned, the portions are huge! Tasty fresh food at cheap prices and friendly service. What a find!

Stopped in for lunch and had a great experience. I had the special for the day. It was the southwest chicken sandwich. It came with fries and was $8.95. The fries were a little done and no flavor. The sandwich was flavorful and very filling. Overall experience was positive but I will try something else next time, and yes there will be a next time.

You will never crave Chipotle again. Jalapeño is so much better. Come in on the weekends for grilled shrimp tacos. Their corn salsa and chipotle cream sauce are worth a visit any day. The owners are always there and super friendly. We're locals and make jalapeño a regular stop for fast and healthful food.

Best restaurant there so far. Big plates for a great price. The food is super yummy and everything is fresh. Kinda like Chapotle but soooo much better. The green chili sauce is a must try. But the best part of all is the amazingly friendly owners that seem to always be there.

  • Michael S.

It's like a mom and pop version of Chipolte, but even better. They used two soft corn tortillas for my tacos that were heated up with cheese in between them. Wow! Amazing. And simply the yummiest quesadilla I've ever had. We'll definitely be back!

  • Rod B.

Wow something really truly healthy and fresh in this town... Not like most Mexican places you would think of. Very different! Homemade sauces that are really good and everything made right in front of you and you choose all the ingredients to go into it. both owners work there and will serve you and you get excellent service. your hardest thing movie what to decide to order. I will be back and so will my friends next time we pass through.

I tried Jalapeño Cafe based on all the positive reviews. Very nice people and eager to serve. The food was fresh but the taste was bland. It does not taste like Mexican food. Not for me. Hope it gets a lot better

Fantastic. The set up is kind of like Chipotle in that you can customize a burrito, a bowl or salad, or even nachos or a quesadilla. The owner and his wife were there and explained the menu and the concept and mentioned they make everything themselves. Pretty neat. They had some cool additional offerings like chipotle shrimp, refried beans, jalapenos, raw onions, cilantro, and even jalapeno ranch and a chipotle cream sauce. Oh and red or green chile! I got a chicken burrito with all the fixings and it was HUGE. Maybe the largest burrito I've ever seen. All for $8! The burrito was everything I'd hoped for and more. Check this place out, Showlow. Affordable, delicious, locally owned with friendly service ... you won't be disappointed!

This is a chipotle knock off, they try really hard, but meat should have flavor and "the really hot sauce" should be at the very least hot! Not even hot Jalapeños at Jalapeño's? Two words- weak sauce!

This place is amazing. I drive a truck and was just driving by and they had room for me to park. The quesadilla was phenom. They definitely know how to cook and can adjust the heat to your taste. Highly recommended. I hope to be back.

This establishment is a Chipotle-type restaurant...stand in line, order, wait for your food. If you're looking to be waited on, this is not the place for you. BUT...the staff is beyond friendly and helpful! If you're lucky enough to visit on a day that they have their chipotle shrimp, GET IT!!!! I had the shrimp in soft tacos with cheese and lettuce. DELICIOUS!!! The chipotle cream sauce that they recommend is a bit spicy but good so proceed with caution if you're not into spicy things. The burritos are huge and yummy, salads are good as are the nachos. They do have american food (burgers, chicken strips, hot dogs) as well! It may not be on the menu but they have it. I've had a burger and it was good! Maybe one of the best i've had on the mountain. They will make pretty much anything, just ask :) Chipotle is not coming to the mountain so this place has nothing to worry about! Not to mention, this place has quite a few more food options than Chipotle.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
